Day 1

Congratulations to all members of the 10 teams that competed today. You did so with great team pride and you looked wonderful in the bright yellow of Westfields. The commentators spoke of our presence on numerous occasions, including refering to Rashid as the 'yellow flash'. A proud day for the Westfields Athletics Club. 12 more teams competing tomorrow.

Our two 4 x 1500m walk teams have started the State Relays weekend with medals. The boys U18 team (Jai Horton, Caleb Strahl, Jaxson Horton and Ciara Cassilles) took the Bronze medal and the girls U18 team (Ella Van Der Meer, Lilly Twigden, Isabella Farrell and Ruby Kernaghan took the Gold.

Well done to our Open 4 x 200m Mens relay team. Rashid Kabba(16), Malikye Kessie (17), Jake Masters (17) and Zac Zaineddine (21) qualified for the final and finished very strongly in 6th place in the final. Rashid did not get passed in either of his races (heat and final) and Zac improved our position in both races by passing other teams to the finish line. Jake and Malikye were also brilliant. Not easy to run a heat and then the final in less than an hour. Well done boys.

Another medal (Silver) by our boys 4 x Discus U18 (centimetres from Gold). Congratulations to Bryce Nolan who P.B.'d and improved his National ranking with a new best throw of 54.87. This is the 34th best throw in the World for all of 2021 and this amazing performance and has also set a new WAC record in 17 years. Also congrats to Emillio who threw the 1.5 kg over 39 metres. Thanks goes to Cameron and Jake for making up the team.

At the same time our boys 4 x Discus U14 have also placed with a Bronze medal. The team was made up of Jayden Tran, Jaxson Horton, Fui Aukafolau and Maddison Kernaghan. Special thank you to Maddison for filling in at the last minute.

Our U16 4 x100m mixed relay were very impressive. Having dropped the baton at the second change, they recovered the baton and came home to finish at full speed catching up to the teams in front. Their 6th place finish was a very couragous and determined effort. Well done to Joshua Jones, Kunal Menon, Charlize Monzon and Marissa Tnokovski.

The surprise result of the day was our U18 4 x 100m mixed relay team of Aleksandra Stoilova, Rashid Kabba, Shola Adeniran and Malikye Kessie. Favourites to win on paper as clearly the fastest 100m sprinters they were edged out by the Campbelltown team whose changes were perfect. Ours changes were average to good and that was the difference at the finish line when we were pipped at the finish line by a mere 3 tenths of a second. A great race.

Summary

Congratulations to all athletes, parents, supporters and friends who braved the eratic weather and camped out at State relays. Our small      club of just under 60 registrtered athletes entered 22 teams and came home with 8 medals, 5 club records and 3 personal bests (individual fields events). Of particular note Alex Goetz P.B. in the hammer of 53.76 has elevated himself to number 1 in Australia U15 mens hammer. As well, Bryce Nolan whose P.B. 54.87 with the 1.5kg discus has rocketed him up the World Rankings and is now sitting in 34th position.

We managed to get photos of most teams, but couldn't get them all.
